• SCOLIOSIS SCREENING

New Jersey State Law 18A:40-4.3 through N.J.S.A. 18A:40-4.5 requires the offering of a biennial scoliosis screening for all students aged 10 through 18. The school nurses will schedule scoliosis screenings during PE classes for Bedminster Township School students in grades 5 and 7 in the Spring. Parents/guardians will be notified in advance of the screenings.

Scoliosis is defined as a condition of the spine in which the spine may curve to the right or left. It is most commonly found during the period of rapid growth and may progress if not treated. The purpose of the screening program is to recognize scoliosis in its earliest stages.  Parents will be informed of any suspected problem.

Students will be asked to wear appropriate clothing to allow for examination of the back. It is requested that girls wear an open-back bathing suit or similar undergarment. Boys will be asked to remove their shirts to allow for an examination of the spine.

All students in Grades 5 and 7 who have not submitted a current physical exam (such as a sports physical) will be screened unless a parent/guardian opts their child out of scoliosis screening in writing.  A letter and opt-out form will be emailed to parents/guardians prior to the screening.

If a student has already been diagnosed with scoliosis or is undergoing treatment for spinal curvature, please inform the school nurses.

Scoliosis screenings are usually included in yearly physical exams conducted by your child’s health provider.
