CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

  • Anticipated Clubs and Activities

    Students are encouraged to participate in clubs and activities offered in Bedminster Township School. Clubs and activities are a positive way for students to explore current interests, develop new passions, and interact with other students in a safe and comfortable environment.

     Please note that most clubs and activities typically require a minimum of 10 participants and may not run if the minimum is not met. Some clubs have parent paid supplies fees that may apply. All clubs and activities may not be offered each school year. In addition, per the Middle School Handbook, middle school students participating in a club or activity must maintain a minimum of 2.75 ("C" average) in all core classes, be present for school the day of the club/activity, and be within positive standing regarding the code of conduct.  

    ARTS AND CRAFTS

    Eligible Students: Grade 2-3

    Students will participate in creative activities such as painting, bracelet making and crafting.  Projects are designed to be completed within the hour session.  This club promotes self-expression, creativity, and sharing of ideas. An additional supply fee may be requested based on the session. 

    CHESS CLUB BEGINNERS

    Eligible Students: Grades 3-4 

    This club is designed for students to learn the basics of chess.  Students will learn:  chess rules and etiquette, set up of the chessboard, standard opening moves, specialized moves such as castling and capturing en passant, strategies for checking and mating, and tactics used to attack and defend.  In addition, students will be introduced to an online platform to extend learning beyond the club's sessions. Each session will be devoted to both instructional and recreational play with one another in individual and group team settings. 

    CHESS CLUB

    Eligible Students: Grades 4-8

    Participants in Chess Club will review basic chess rules, etiquette, and strategies.  Students will have the opportunity to refine skills and strategies through instruction, games, and in-house tournament play.  There may be opportunities for out-of-school tournament play as well.

    COMPUTER CLUB

    Eligible Students: Grades 4-8

    This club is designed to help students to become more familiar with the school’s computers. Students may be introduced to grade-appropriate web quests, district programs, educational games, and word-processing projects.

    COOKING CLUB 

    Eligible Students: Grades vary by session

    Students in the Cooking Club learn about the fundamentals of safe cooking and food assembly. Students will learn to follow a recipe, use different kitchen tools and appliances, and apply a variety of cooking techniques. Snacks and desserts prepared are designed to be made during a single meeting.  An additional ingredient/supply fee may be requested based on the session. 

    DRAMA CLUB 

    Eligible Students: Grade 2; Grade 3

    Drama Club allows students in grades 2 and 3 respectively to experience a theatrical experience!  Students will develop and/or adapt a Reader’s Theater script.  Students will audition for roles, engage in rehearsals, create props and sets, and learn about theater collaborations. 

    ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB

    Eligible Students: Grades 3-8

    The Environmental Club supports the Bedminster School Garden.  Students prepare the ground for planting, plants flowers and vegetables from seed, tend to plants and replant seedlings outdoors in the garden.  The Environmental Club supports other activities such as schoolyard cleanups and advocacy for keeping a healthy and sustainable school environment. An additional supply fee may be requested based on the session.

    GREEN (SUSTAINABILITY) TEAM

    Eligible Students: Grades K-8

    Bedminster's Green Team is part of the district initiative to infuse sustainability efforts into the school environment. Student members of the Green Team collaborate with school staff to incorporate policies and practices that make sustainability part of all students’ educational experiences. The mission of this team is to make an immediate impact on staff and student wellness.

    INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM

    Eligible Students: Grades 3-8 for respective groups

    Bedminster Township School provides many opportunities for students to participate in the instrumental music program. There are two bands and a jazz band for students in grades 4-8. The string orchestra and junior orchestra are open to string players in grades 3-8. Second graders are encouraged to join the Suzuki strings program where they can learn to play violin, viola, or cello in a fun, exciting way. The Handbell Ensemble consists of students in grades 5-8. Lessons and ensemble rehearsals usually meet one time a week during the school day. Bands and Jazz Band for grades 5-8, along with the string orchestra, usually rehearse before school. 

    LITERARY CLUB (middle school)

    Eligible Students: Grades 5-8

    Members of the Literacy Club participate in reading, writing, listening and speaking activities.  Students learn persuasive writing techniques, develop their vocabulary, and practice oral reading skills through dramatic readings, presentations and interactive debates.  Students learn skills that can be used for Speech and Debate competitions.   

    MATHCOUNTS

    Eligible Students: Grades 6-8

    MATHCOUNTS is a club for students to participate in math explorations and games that are challenging to students at all levels. Students work together to solve math problems and discuss methodologies for solving them.  Students may participate in a state-wide competition called MATHCOUNTS that takes place yearly.

    ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

    Eligible Students: Grades 4-5 (elementary); Grades 6-8 (middle)

    Odyssey of the Mind is a creative, problem solving competition that helps students develop important lifelong skills including project-based learning and teamwork.  Teams select a problem from a provided list and work together to solve that problem over several months.  The team presents their solution in an 8 minute performance that is completely prepared by the students including a storyline, script, music, set, props, and costumes.  Odyssey of the Mind involves different levels of competition and may require time on the weekends for preparation or competition.

    PARADES

    Eligible Students: Grade 4-8

    Student groups perform music for the school Halloween parade and for the Bedminster Township Memorial Day parade.

    ROBOTICS CLUB 

    Eligible Students: Grades 5-8

    Students at the Bedminster Robotics Club will develop team-building engineering skills related to building robots and challenges. In addition, students will learn various computer programming applications as they relate to robotics. Teams will be formed to compete with one another in friendly tournaments related to the First Lego League and the Vex Robotics IQ competitions. 

    SCIENCE CLUB

    Eligible Students: Grades 1-3 (depending on sessions)

    This club allows students to explore different scientific topics. In the Grade 2 session, students will have the opportunity to learn about gene traits, aeronautics, predator and prey relationships, take nature hikes, and search for a variety of plant and animal life. In the Grade 2-3 session, students will have the opportunity to learn about adopting an endangered species. The following topics will be studied: birds, wetlands, erosion, and weathering.  In the Grade 3 session, students will have the opportunity to learn about adopting an endangered species. The following topics will be studied: birds, wetlands, erosion, and weathering. 

    SKI CLUB

    Eligible Students: Grades 7-8 (available to Grade 6 if space if available)

    The Ski Club gives its members a chance to learn and practice skiing and snowboarding skills. After-school trips are taken to local mountains such as Shawnee Mountain in Pennsylvania. Equipment can be rented at the facility or can be provided by the student. Lessons may be available as well. Fees vary yearly and are determined based on costs for lift tickets, bussing, and possible rental or lesson needs. 

    STORYTIME

    Eligible Students: Grade 1

    Students in Storytime Club have the opportunity to listen to a story and participate in a hands-on activity related to the story.  Students have the opportunity to work together and have fun with text.

    STUDENT COUNCIL 

    Eligible Students: Grades 7-8  (officers elected); Grades 5-8 (delegates apply) 

    Student Council provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate leadership skills in the school building.  Officers and delegates represent the student body in discussions with the administration and initiate and organize activities and events for the Middle School at varied times throughout the year.

    VOCAL MUSIC PROGRAM

    Eligible Students: Grades 3-8 for respective groups

    Bedminster Township School has two choral ensembles. The Treble Chorus is composed of students in grades 3 & 4. The repertoire includes a variety of unison, two-part, and occasionally three-part music in treble voicing. The Concert Chorus comprises students in grades 5, 6, 7 & 8. The repertoire includes a variety of music, usually in three parts, in mixed voices.

    WELLNESS COMMITTEE

    Eligible Students: Grades K-8

    Student members of the Wellness Committee work with school staff to develop policies and practices that make wellness part of each student and staff member’s educational experience. Bedminster's Wellness Committee is part of the district initiative to infuse sustainability efforts into the school environment.

    WRITER'S WORKSHOP 

    Eligible Students: Grades 5-8 (up to 20 students)

    Writer’s Workshop gives students the opportunity to improve their writing.  Students will brainstorm ideas, work collaboratively, and explore different styles of writing. Students will draft their own writing pieces with guidance and encouragement from the advisor and peers.
